A woman holding a baby in a dimly lit nursery, looking out the window at night. The room has a crib, a chair with a stuffed bunny, and various toys and decorations.

When My Arms Are Free

This poem was inspired by the newness, excitement, and joy of becoming a new mother. People tell you what to expect but until you actually feel it, touch it, experience it, smell it…. you truly have no idea what’s coming. What a wonderfully exhausting time! The love you feel supersedes the frustration and angst from lack of sleep. Your body tells you to stop but sometimes that’s just not possible. The way your sweet baby needs you is so comforting yet so overwhelming at times. The minutes and days fly by. No one tells you about relishing every sore muscle and bone from holding your baby in your arms. There will always come a day when your arms no longer need to hold them like before. You will miss the days when your arms were occupied.
